Introduction

Description

Hello, my name is Eric R. Burton, and I grew up in Boulder City, Nevada,a quaint town 28 miles southeast of Las Vegas, that was founded in 1931 as a planned community to house workers constructing the Hoover Dam. 1 Unlike its glitzy neighbor, Boulder City maintains a serene, small-town vibe. Designed by architect Saco Rienk DeBoer, it earned the nickname "Nevada's Garden City" for its lush landscaping and thoughtful layout, making it a popular retirement destination and a haven for history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts.2

History

The town's historical significance is tied to the Hoover Dam, a marvel of engineering that spurred its creation and remains its most iconic landmarks. Boulder City's Historic District, with 514 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcases its architectural heritage, while the Nevada Southern Railway Museum provides a glimpse into its rail history with train rides and exhibits. The town's commitment to preserving its past is evident in its community events and landmarks, contrasting it with Nevada's more commercialized areas.3

Amenities

Beyond its rich history, Boulder City offers several natural attractions like Lake Mead for boating and fishing, and Hemenway Valley Park, where bighorn sheep can be seen feeding on the grass. Unique facts include the invention of the hard hat here in 1933 and its ranking as a top U.S. retirement spot in 2009. Local dining, such as the Coffee Cup Cafe featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," and antique shopping make Boulder City a charming and delightful retreat blending history, nature, and small-town hospitality.4
